There's nothing wrong with aiming Batman at a family audience, and that's what's happening here. As a sequel to Batman Returns, it's a huge leap in tone and aesthetic; lots of jaunty camera angles and the odd splash of day-glo makes this a far lighter, campy affair than Burton's efforts.

Kilmer is a good Wayne- not as layered as Keaton and not as unpredictable, but a safe bet for kid friendly summer movies. Chris O'Donnell has the attitude, but feels a bit old- and Carrey owns the Riddler role.

It's a shame then that Tommy Lee Jones can't be the straight man he needs to be to counter that insanity. It's fun, meaningless but breezy- not quite encroaching on Adam West but closer to that than Burton.
