Review of Batman Begins (2005) by Faceless N — 28 Apr 2014
The beginning of the Godfather trilogy of comic book movies. The first movie to bother treating Batman and his allies as characters. For this film the director/writer Christopher Nolan wanted to keep the focus on Batman so the villains were downplayed.
The BIGGEST villainous presence here is The Scarecrow played by Cillian Murphy in an awesomely creepy performance. Christian Bale is the first REAL Batman. As Bruce Wayne he pulls off the playboy persona very well.
Better than any other Bruce Wayne. The film makes a point of showing that Bruce Wayne has THREE sides. His mentally scarred self, his playboy persona and his demonic TRUE self: The Batman. Michael Caine portrays Alfred with the perfect balance of levity and fatherly lecturing.
Gary Oldman is Gordon personified. It's hard to imagine anyone who's going to surpass those two. The films MAIN VILLAIN however suffers from the lack of attention to him. Ra's Al Ghul is no small fry villain.
He's a presence to be reckoned with. But Nolan downplays him to the point where he has NO presence at all. You don't FEEL him when he's off screen. But the ending get's you pumped for what's next.
