Review of Batman (1989) by Walker S — 26 Jan 2014
Tim Burton's interpretation of Detective Comic's most famous creation, Gotham city in this film (and the sequel) is a far more Gothic place than it would later become under Schumacher (more mardi-gras than Halloween) and Nolan (who posits a more grounded reality).
Michael Keaton takes on the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, but this is really Jack Nicholson's show, who cuts a swathe throughout the film as Batman's arch-enemy The Joker. For my money, this portrayal is also more of a Joker than the more recent Heath Ledger's performance (a psychopathic maniac? Yes. A Joker? No).
