Review of Batman (1989) by Christopher L — 27 Mar 2016
Despite its age I'm glad to say that Tim Burton's Batman (1989) still holds up. You gotta think that when this movie came out people's view of Batman was from the 60's with it "POW", "WHAM!".
This was the first real serious take the caped crusader to show everyone that wasn't Batman. Although this movie can be a bit comic book you never feel watching it that it's out of place. A big credit to Tim Burton on the making of this film.
Everything in this film from the look of Gothem to the Micheal Keaton himself shows how this film feels like a team button film. Keaton has Batman although he doesn't say much when he dons the cape gives us a good performance to which you believe him.
Although you can very much tell watching this film that he couldn't move very much in the suit. And this portrayal as Bruce Wayne I didn't buy, I found his Bruce Wayne's scenes very boring and could not find and convince me on showing him how the death of his parents motivated him to find crime.
That's another part of this film I didn't like. The death of his parents should be public knowledge but, instead no one who's and it takes an investigation of Vicki Vale to tell us. I feel they really missed out for you to connect with Bruce had they showed a scene with his parents death.
Where the movie really shines is the film's take on the Joker played by Jack Nicholson. He was born to play this character. Watching this film his take on the joker feels very natural to him. This where the film could had lost but, you believe that in place as bad a Gothem that someone like the Joker can from here.
Just 2 things I didn't like about the joker. No motivation and the number one thing....Unpredictability! I mean come on despite many incarnations of the joker you can make him anyway you like but, he has to be unpredictable.
Despite that I really liked the Joker in this film and he fits perfectly in this world. Vicki Vale was ok but, I didn't believe the love relationship with her and Bruce. Commissioner Gordon, Lt. Eckhardt and Repoter Know in this film that the things I hated the most.
Especially Know. This film could had been a lot better with out them in it. Despite that and the fact that the effects on this film did not age gracefully over time this is still one of the great Batman films and it stands up great against Christopher Nolan's Batman.
One more thing I forgot to mention that I really loved was the look of Gothem City. The buildings and people how there dressed. Heck in the bad guys at the beginning were suits like gangsters of the 20's and 30's.
But Burton uses this effect that ha really died off where you see in films like Star Wars. They couldn't really had the money to build these really big sets so they painted the background and made it blend easily with the scenes.
Your A sensually seeing a painting but, they convince you so well that to you the audience makes you feel that they build these grand sets. This film gets an 8/10 for me.
