Review of Batman (1989) by Christian M — 03 Jul 2016
Batman is perhaps the most important superhero movie ever created! It's the game changer, the movie that laid down the foundation which has been built upon by countless other superhero movies. Tim Burton set out to rediscover what the Batman character truly represented, the man tortured by events that occurred earlier in his life, the man who chose to become something that was needed to root out of the criminal element and Tim Burton succeeded on every level possible! Not only did Burton give Batman his identity back but it was Michael Keaton's monumental performance as the Dark Knight that sealed it; Keaton's stoic and tormented portrayal of the character is spellbinding. This isn't one of those light toned superhero movies that plague our screens today, it's a dark tale full of menace and it's enhanced by Danny Elfman's haunting and melancholy score which goes hand in hand with Anton Furst's gothic and visceral Gotham City.
If Batman hadn't been created then superhero movies would've died out a long time ago. This is DC's masterpiece, this is how you do a superhero movie.
