Review of Bastards (2013) by Walter M — 21 Oct 2013
Renowned French director Claire Denis' latest is a perplexing film, that's often lurid and disturbing. Using an overwhelmingly elliptical plot (that may or may not be told out of sequential order), the film is frankly confounding, and Denis is never quite as front and center on her characters as she feels to be.
The film's atmosphere, however, speaks volumes more than the script though, with an unerring mood and a stunning original score (by Denis mainstays The Tindersticks). Bastards is certainly impressive as a work of great craft.
Certain to prove divisive, and to say it's not for everyone sounds like an understatement, but Bastards is a dark and jarring mirror to some of Denis' happier films.
