Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by David R — 24 Jan 2009
Okay, there are a few very obvious reasons to see this movie, and all of them involve an early-30s Sharon Stone. But essentially this is soft-core pornography with a fairly dull (and largely unexplained) murder mystery to fill in the "story" bits.
Ceaseless music tells us when we're supposed to be surprised or in suspense, and poor Jeanne Triplehorn is saddled with the unenviable task of convincing us she loves a thoroughly unloveable cokehead, alcoholic, trigger-happy, sexually frustrated, bipolar protagonist played by Michael Douglas.
Almost nothing about this movie makes sense, except that everyone in the film wants to have violent sex with Sharon Stone.
