Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Hanna R — 31 Jan 2009
Having seen this for the first time, I can only conclude that the film's popularity was strictly due to all the fuss about Sharon Stone's crotch - the ensuing panic obviously blinded the public to the fact that the film, as thriller or a mystery, makes no sense at all.
The film starts out as slick Hollywood product with all the cliches - the 'out of control cop', his buddy who meets an untimely end, etc., but as the climax is reached, it retreats into a Euro-art house ambiguity that is far from satisfying.
