Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Vivian L — 14 Jul 2010
I've only seen Sharon Stone in this one film, but I think she's exceptional. We had to watch this film for our film studies class, so we analyzed all the different motifs and themes -- sexuality, danger, etc..
I was impressed by the subtle tones and symbols, and the sex scenes seemed so raw and real. Mostly, I was impressed that I wasn't able to predict the ending to this film, which could have been obvious.
There is a roughness and chemistry between Michael Douglas' and Stone's characters.. but it's not horribly evident, which made the whole film seem a bit indifferent. There was passion, but the only scene which seemed to show that was between Nick and Beth.. and they didn't really explain that relationship as much as I wanted.
Overall, a solid film, and something that will be precedent for all other femme fatale films. But please, don't film a sequel (Basic Instinct 2 trailer looks HORRIBLE).
