Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Mirko B — 25 Jul 2011
So did she shave or not? That seems to be the biggest dilemma left after you're done with Verhoeven's 1992 pseudo-Hitchcockian film. Fortunately, today's technology can be used for all sorts of stuff so we know that Sharon Stone doesn't wear a Brazilian.
Or at least, she didn't back then. The interrogation scene is still screaming in provocation 19 years later. Catherine Tramell seems to be in control of everyone around her, mostly by the means of her stormy sexuality.
It's wonderful to see her turn the detectives into oozing sissy boys only by crossing her legs, especially Michael Douglas. However, Tramell's tease never crosses into the territory of cheap erotica.
Unfortunately, after reaching her artistic apex with "Casino"(where she was unjustly robbed of an Oscar), Stone descended into shallow blockbuster cinema, continually borrowing from Tramell for the villains she keeps playing these days.
What a waste. But then again, maybe that's all she's really capable of.
