Review of Basic Instinct (1992) by Anh H — 01 Dec 2013
Following Hitchcock's footsteps? ... Nailed it! In fact, there are surprisingly more to watch beside the obviously steamy hot chains of action between the sheet. First of all, Sharon Stone. It's like the character was made for her.
She amazes me with how she portrays a dangerous and psychotic mind, but also a broken and vulnerable sense of self. It's kinda mesmerizing the way she acts. You know she's evil, but then you're not so sure.
She's the master of the game. The brilliant lighting work also helps depicting the complexity of this character, especially in the i-don't-smoke-yes-you-do car scene and in the interrogation room.
It shows that she's always in control and the others are just puppets with strings in the dark. But in my opinion, the best thing about this movie is the music. so intense and thrilling. The movie would be nothing without the background music really.
Props to Jerry Goldsmith. Anything I hate in this film? The club scene maybe, it's just so painful to watch an awkward chick punching in the air [like she don't care]. Maybe it's a pretty hip dance move at the time Idk.
The last ten minutes were a bit sloppy too, for they're trying too hard to make sense, you know, put things together. But in general, it's a decent movie about not so decent people that I would like to watch again sometime for a guilty pleasure.
