Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Ben D — 03 Aug 2009
This was incredible.Barton Fink was one of those movies that demanded repeated viewings to fully appreciate. It was for me anyways. It's a black comedy that changes into something quite sinister near the end.
All the main characters are eccentric nut jobs that could only feel at home in a Coen Brothers movie. It's something your either love or loath as they are so incredibly fucked up. The cast are all superb, Goodman is outstanding, the man's a genius,it's hard not to like Charlie when you first meet him,he's so infectious,it makes it all the sweeter when you find out his real identity.
Turturro is also perfect as Barton, this must be one of his best roles to date. The Hotel itself is a character, with it's wet walls and slimly wall paper. It would feel completely desolated and deserted of life,if it wasn't for the shoes.
About the half way mark and the feeling of the movie changes dramatically. It starts to feel like a horror movie, the once wet walls of the hotel are now dripping with fire as Barton's sanity is pushed to it's limit.
This is such a cleaver movie, this was written when the brothers had writers block whilst penning Millers Crossing. That alone blows my mind, that something this good was created that way.
