Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Ben G — 22 Feb 2018
Easily my least favorite of the "classic" Coen Brothers movies. There are some great elements (the nightmarish hotel, the clueless but controlling studio head), but they simply don't fit together, the entire project clumsy rather than fluid.
The slow pacing and plot abstraction are clearly stylistic choices by the directors, however the Coens are still best when they do what comes naturally to them. A respectable experiment, but ultimately a failure.
