Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Colin H — 04 Dec 2008
As a reasonable fan of the Coen Brothers and their films, I was curious. As expected, this film is weird, but weird in a subtle... mental way in which everything isn't quite right. Following a praised playwright's journey into Hollywood and meeting the restricting, hard and degrading life of a power-hungry industry.
Quite telling, and had some resonance with me, about a writer who only wanted to make a difference in his own way, only to find that the world isn't interested in what he thinks, and just wants him to entertain the masses. A blatant strike at Hollywood and all modern media, as industries take inspired people and chew them up.
This resonant meaning is mixed with a rather surreal sequence of events, which I haven't quite resolved in my head yet... and the Coen Brothers' bizarre, often dark, sense of humour which always surprises me.
