Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Jani M — 23 Sep 2009
This is a film that I want to see in high-def more than just about any other. I can't say that Barry Lyndon is my favorite Kubrick film; with its snail-pace and three-hour length it can be a chore to sit through.
However, it is certainly one of the most stunningly beautiful films ever made. From a purely technical point of view, the movie is stunning and truly shows Kubrick's mastery of the art of cinema. The direction, photography and music are all one of a kind.
Add to that the beautiful costumes, locations and period detail. However, the story is bleak and depressing and Ryan O'Neal is not too impressive in the lead. Still, Barry Lyndon is an important Kubrick work.
Multiple viewings are recommended. It will be amazing in 1080p.
