Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Mike G — 09 Apr 2010
Maybe Kubrick's most underappreciated masterpiece, this very long film covers a lot of ground. The look and design of the picture is absolutely first rate and evokes the Rococo style of the likes of Watteau and Fragonard et al.
When Kubrick ultimately couldn't get "Napoleon" financed, possibly the greatest movie never made, he turned to Thackeray after "A Clockwork Orange" and filmed something which would have predated the Napoleonic era by only a few generations.
Barry's adventures are fascinating and the authenticism achieved has few rivals. I think it's mesmerizing, and I could never watch it too many times.
