Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Jeffrey C — 24 Jul 2010
Sumptuous adaptation of the Thackeray novel by Stanley Kubrick - so beautifully designed and photographed, every frame looks like an oil painting. The glacial pacing will make some twitch in their seats, but the attentive viewer will find himself spellbound with each shot.
The story, concerning the adventures of an 18th century Irish opportunist, is no great shakes, but as with so many Kubrick films, the fascination lies not so much within the story as it does in the telling.
Ryan O' Neal does a fair job with the title role, but the real star are the costumes, art direction, production design and the wonderful cinematography by John Alcott. Memorable use of Handel as well.
