A beautiful, boring film. There is no doubt that Kubrick is at the top of his craft in this production, forming a complex, epic fictional story that is slow and methodical (meticulous perhaps), but hopelessly detached.
More than anything, I feel Kubrick had a vision in his mind of the rise and fall of a man in the late 18th century, and wanted to capture that vision in scaping camera-shots rather than an affecting story, and was hugely successful in that attempt.
The end product is a film that is pleasing to savor but difficult to enjoy.
