Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Zach C — 20 Mar 2015
I could watch this tragi-comic story over and over again. Which I have done. I still remember the first time I put this DVD in the old player and turned it off during the first romantic scenes. I thought it was going to be a boring old floozy.
How naive I can be. Fast forward my VHS life a year later, upon "giving it another shot" was mind-shocked by the mistake I had previously made. A very subtle story in terms of action but boy are the characters nuanced and rich with soft, interesting, sensibilities.
Small surprises play big in this story. And the death of one character will shatter a soul. The production design - uncanny in it's detail. They coined the term "cinematography" because of this movie and it's low, candle lit, scenes.
The acting - sincerity is the benchmark and yes, the bench has been marked. And finally, the score - the use of Handel's Sarabande launches this movie up into the realm of masterpiece. Kubrick's greatest achievement.
