Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Keith W — 16 May 2011
A shamefully overlooked film from 2010, Barney's Version is a mature and realistic meditation on life and love centred around a man's three marriages. Giamatti once again impresses as the titular Barney, making what could have easily been a detestable character a charming, empathetic and eventually, heartbreaking, portrayal of a man filled with regret.
My only gripe with the film is that it verges slightly too close to over-sentimentality at times and tries to fit a little bit too much into its running time to fully do all its plot strands justice.
