Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Mimi H — 19 Feb 2011
Barney's Version is based on a novel by Mordecai Richler, which I have not read. However, if the film is an accurate reflection of the book (not always the case), it should be on my list. The film is a sprawling retelling of one man's adventures in love, told from his perspective late in life as his memory begins to fade, and therefore perhaps not completely reliable (hence, presumably, the title).
One short marriage (a mistake) ended tragically, a second marriage, genuinely embarked on but without love, ended by choice, and in the midst of this the discovery of the love of his life (Miriam), who he never gave up pursuing.
Barney is in many ways an unlikeable character, but he is made sympathetic by a strong performance, and in the end we believe in him and want him to succeed. Ultimately, a romantic film about the importance of persistence in love.
We all make mistakes in love - it's never too late to find the right one, and when you find them don't give up too easily.
