Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Andrew C — 27 Mar 2011
Great performances from Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman spearhead this great bio-pic (even if it sometimes felt like they were reprising their roles from AMERICAN SPLENDOR and MEET THE FOCKERS respectively).
The film's strongest moments come near the start where there's plenty of fun and humour, but I was more than willing to wade through the melodrama of the final act. However, I think there should have been more focus on the complicated friendship between Barney (Giamatti) and Boogie (Barney's dropkick friend).
Considering the massively life-changing event that takes place between them it seemed odd that their relationship wasn't fleshed out as much as that between Barney and his various wives.
