Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Andy W — 13 Jun 2011
Slightly disappointing film in which Giamatti plays a mostly unlikable character - which, had it been played for laughs, could have been fun (along the lines of Bill Murray in Broken Flowers): Instead he's a bit of a dirtbag, which makes it hard to actually care about what happened in his life.
As for his story, its simply not eventful enough. Sure, there are some big moments in the story, but there's a feeling of things coming and going, without ever going too deep. Maybe this would have worked better as an episodic tv drama? Its well-cast and performed, and enjoyable to some degree, but it leaves you feeling like you're getting half the story.
