It is safe to say that Barney's Version's ambition quite easily outweighs its impact. I like Giamatti and he put in another solid performance amid a nice cast. The downside is that although in terms of time and period the plot is sprawling it isn't really structured very well.
At times there are uncomfortably transitions between the flashback segments and the 'present'. All quibbles are relatively minor though because this ultimately an entertaining film even if it is an unspectacular one.
