Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Connor _ — 29 Jun 2011
This movie is really a display of Paul Giamatti's talent, above all else. It's the fictional biography of Barney Panofsky, a cynical television producer, and his three marraiges. Although the first two are very short-lived, the film capitalizes on the third, "happiest" marraige, to Rosamund Pike.
However, I found the first wife, the smallest character of the three, to be the most interesting, and best acted b Rachelle Lefevre. I think there should've been more scenes with her character because she had potential to improve the film and possibly score on Oscar nomination.
The screenplay is rich with pacing, lights, heavies, emotion; all in all a very well-rounded screenplay. I think director Richard J. Lewis is nothing above average; he was given a great screenplay and just put it on camera.
Giamatti gives an excellent screenplay life. B+.
