Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Katie B — 10 Oct 2011
One of those movies that you want to like because the critics raved about it, but that you'd never watch again. The production is flawless, but the characters are so grimy and unlikable (EVEN Paul Giamatti's), and the story is so sad and turgidly long that it left me feeling like I'd wasted two hours (yes, two hours) seeing Paul Giamatti depreciate before my eyes, both physically and morally.
The acting is good. Dustin Hoffman still manages to be cute as all get out, but the only effect this movie had is known as the Tevye Effect: making me wish even more desperately that I was Jewish, which sadly, I am not.
Oy, vey.
