Review of Barfly (1987) by Thomas M — 25 Sep 2017
Almost 20 years before 'Factotum' and Hank Chinaski is drifting around the seedy low life bars of 80's America. As usual, Chinaski is drinking heavily, fighting, writing and getting mixed up with a woman or two along the way. The fact that the film is a triumph of low life culture (high brow is defeated in the film, both concepts played by women that Chinaski is torn between) makes a refreshing change from the usual rags to riches tale.
Mickey Rourke's performance is stunning. He nails Bukowski perfectly. This film easily ties with 'Factotum' as one of my all time favourites.
