Review of Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) by Ravi S — 18 Aug 2017
Bareilly ki barfi.
????/?????
All stories are born from zan ya zar ya zameen [women or riches or land]. how you tell makes or breaks the story.
Edge of the seat thrillers maybe many. the wife-husband team of ashwiny iyer tiwari, who directs her second film with equal if not better finesse and nitesh tiwari, the writer deserve a standing ovation for presenting the first edge of the seat rom-com in hindi cinema. the suspense on who gets the love of a woman, the used or the madly in love user unfolds only when it should in the climax.
You correlate, laugh out loud and cry through the twists and turns that makes bareilly ki barfi extremely watchable. what you predict is not what happens next.
The film is short, sweet tasting just like the finest barfi one has sometime or the other savoured. you leave the screen deliciously satiated perhaps thinking of a second helping.
Based on nicolas barreau's french book the ingredients of love, bkb is an intelligent adaptation brilliantly performed by the star cast who have been given equally good dialogues that include funny one liners, captured in just right tones that make a modern-day uttar pradesh city.
Alas, seeing empty seats on the first saturday one wonders if there is a room for intelligent hindi cinema. hopefully the charm will spread by word of mouth. one of those rare occasions the critics who matter have actually got it right, bareilly ki barfi is a sweet watch, go for it.
