Director Gene Saks has a simplistic way of directing. And in a Neil Simon comedy, where dialogue reigns as the make-or-break in the film, that's the only way to direct. To allow the jokes to be sink in, to let the banter go back and forth, to allow the actors to move freely as the camera follows them, instead of cutting back and forth. It isn't full of flare nor does it impress with deep symbolism or unique angles, but "Barefoot in the Park" trusts its actors and their timing, and allows every joke and one-liner to be seen, heard, and appreciated.

Doing the acting is the man who originated his role on Broadway, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Charles Boyer, (Oscar Nominated) Mildred Natwick, and Herb Edelman. Their chemistry is what makes this film work like a gem. It's easy to point out any single one of this ensemble and I could go on forever speaking of specific moments they each contributed, but that'd be pointless. They all came together as an ensemble, that's what's most important. "Barefoot in the Park" is a very funny film that exudes naturalism and boasts wonderful performances from a wonderful cast.
