Review of Barbie (2023) by Zackery_Towne-B — 29 Jul 2023
As a therapist I was actually impressed at how Barbie was portrayed emotionally and intellectually as she goes through her “real world “ existential crises and is immersed in an alternate reality very different from seemingly feminist/ perfect Barbieland.
A full spectrum of emotions is experienced here amidst hilarious gender role reversal (enter: insecure man child Ken). Barbie is visually entertaining and cheeky with some surprisingly powerful scenes.
America Ferrara’s character expressing her disgust for women’s lifelong battle with needing to measure up to society’s unrealistic expectations of women is brilliant! Definitely a must see mother/ daughter movie as it will spark some important conversation.
