Review of Barbarella (1968) by J'onn J — 19 Jan 2008
I believe it has been established that I am a sucker for campy cult classics, and this film perhaps best typifies that moniker. From the famous voyeuristically sexy first scene, you can see you're in for an interesting ride, somewhat unlike anything you've experienced before - not that it is cinematically inventive in any way, it just perfectly mixes cheesy b-movie aesthetics, 60s sci-fi, soft core porn, tongue-in-cheek humor, and even elements from horror and romantic comedy thrown in for good measure.
It is one of those midnight movies that I could watch any day of the week at any time of the day - and apparently I'm not alone because it is one of the most referenced movies in the music world (i.
E. the bands Duran Duran and Matmos both got their names from characters in this film). You gotta love it - well, I guess YOU don't HAVE to, but I definitely do.
