When your movie begins with a (though technically well-done) slow-motion striptease of your leading lady, then one shouldn't be surprised by the kind of movie that ends up following. On all matters of writing, acting, direction, most elements that make up a movie.

..Barbarella is a mess. The only half-decent performance is Jane Fonda who says her lines with the bored affectation of someone who wishes they were anywhere else, which isn't surprising when her character is literally a single-episode Star Trek heroine as played by Bridgette Bardot.

However there are elements that work in this. While the plot is incomprehensible at best, it is full of insane creativity and fascinating worlds and the production and costume design call back to Flash Gordon, albeit with a more mature vibe.
