Review of Baran (2001) by Edwin P — 04 Sep 2011
Majid Majidi's "Baran".
The release of "Baran" on DVD is yet another example of how a fine film that got very limited release theatrically in North America can now finally reach a much broader audience. It made an appearance at the New York Film Festival, got a weeklong qualifying Oscar run in December in two theaters and then made an appearance again in May in a handful of theaters before going into obscurity.
The film is about sacrifice and unrequited love between an Iranian young man and an Afghan refugee. Here, director Majid Majidi's efforts show with the film's striking cinematography, solid performances and memorable images. We get a rare glimpse about the culture and its people in this part of the world that we normally don't even know or hear about especially from today's Western media.
"Baran" is enriching and emotionally satisfying. The recent slate of films coming out of Iran as of late has been quite impressive.
