Review of Baraka (1992) by Heather S — 12 Sep 2011
I know everyone thinks this film is supposed to be wonderful - a melding of aesthetics and life and all that - but I just didn't like it that much. For one, the fact that there is no real dialogue or narration bothers me.
If the film were to be moved by music-alone, as it is, that would be fine; however, because it is a melding of themes (religion, ritual, daily life, man's destructive habits, workforce, nature, etc.
), it to me is sort of a random combination of images that are nothing more than interesting or nice to look at. I didn't gain anything from it, and to be honest some of the images were not all that impressive either.
