Review of Bang Bang You're Dead (2003) by Vincent M — 03 Mar 2008
I can't find the words to express to what extent this film has affected me. I found myself bound up with emotion, anger and sadness as the film found it's momentum. 'Bang Bang You're Dead' is such an accurate depiction of the cruelty of adolescent's that I couldn't help but feel every emotion and thought that stormed through the antagonist's trouble mind, played skillfully and profoundly by Ben Foster.
Being on the receiving end of ridicule and harsh abuse both physical and mental of my peers throughout high school was by far one of the contributing factors to molding who I am today despite the fact that my mind was never excelled or considered playing out any of the frightening thoughts that occasioned my mind.
My parents and the morality they instilled in me while growing up was my failsafe in dealing with my adolescent years, and for this I am eternally grateful. Some will argue that these situations are normal, fun or even contribute to being a better person.
This isn't the case for anyone who already suffers from depression, self-esteem issues or simply being an outcast. This treatment can be dramatically painful for the recipient. In the picture the students perform a version of a play of the same title, this is an actual play which can be downloaded from the internet and has now been performed by theatre groups all over Canada and the United States.
The play can be downloaded here. The film attempts to distinguish many aspects of adolescent violence. It does not justify the violent acts of either side, but it does provide honest evidence and situations which can paint the big picture in comprehending just what pushes teens over the edge.
I feel this film should be seen by everyone. It's message is provocative, controversial and truthful. We must attempt to understand these violent tragedies to prevent them from happening. If only I could have seen this film a few years ago.
