Review of Bandslam (2009) by Jenny W — 25 Aug 2009
The trailer, plot, and actors in this movie make this film have much lower expectations than it deserves. Thought by many to only be yet another teen movie with cliches and a simple plot. However, viewing leaves one pleasantly surprised.
This film, whilst clearly aimed at a tween/teenage audience, is surprisingly enticing to older viewers too. Gaelen Connell is brilliant as Will Burton, a perfect mix of geek and realism. The songs written for the film (especially "Phil's Song") are surprisingly good for this type of film.
The narrative is strong with enough comedy to keep it light, but enough moments of drama to make you really engage with and care about the characters. This is a very well written and put together film for its genre.
The special guest at the end, although somewhat expected, add a bit of extra star quality in this unexpected success. Overall a very enjoyable teen flick, with more strength than most.
