Review of Bandslam (2009) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
Sometimes tasteless and slightly boring, but frequently cute and witty. The climactic song of the hero's band is only a glorified bar mitzvah tune, but it beats the hell out of the skunky, Nickelbackian ballad that the villains perform.
As a whole, the soundtrack is decent, with some thoughtful classic rock numbers to counterbalance its requisite Disneyfied alt-rock, although it does stumble a bit at the end when it turns a thoughtful Wilco song into an accompaniment for a trite, obvious, "Aw shucks" conclusion.
That's just a little gripe, though, and not a big deal at all considering the musical holocaust that a movie like this could have wrought.
