Review of Bandslam (2009) by Taelyr G — 01 Sep 2009
When a film is marketed in the wrong way it can either cause great disappointment, or a pleasant surprise. Instead of the High School Musical-clone Bandslam appears to be, what an audience will discover is that the film is closer to School of Rock-lite, with cliches and generic storytelling, but a heart that remains true throughout. There is much more of a genuine love for music here than has been displayed recently in such rubbish as The Boat That Rocked, where the writers' passion for bands as varied as The Velvet Underground to Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly is felt.
It also helps when you have actors that are dedicated to their characters, where the limitations of the three principles (Connell, Hudgens, Michalka) can be overlooked thanks to interesting relationships and apt direction. As I said previously, a pleasant surprise.
