Review of Bananas (1971) by Eric R — 09 Jun 2011
I really wish Woody Allen would make films more like this still. Bananas is an hysterical film about Filding Mellish, a New Yorker who follows the love of his life to a small fictional country in that just so happens to be in the middle of revolution after their leader was assassinated.
Its a more slap-stick, one-liner type of comedy than other Allen films but its also a rather intelligent farce. The opening sequence featuring American New Reporters covering the impending revolution is an hysterical scene.
Its almost as if Woody has summoned up his best Charlie Chaplin impression at times. There is probably an equal amount of visual comedy and verbal comedy. The most playful, fun Woody Allen movie that I can think of.
