Review of Bamboozled (2000) by Josiah M — 24 Aug 2007
This movie is about an African-American TV writer, Pierre Delacroix, with a Harvard education who continues to pitch shows depicting African-American families living more like white middle class families.
The network he works for refuses to pick up any of the shows. His boss urges him to write a show depicting African-Americans as jobless hooligans since he insists that's the type of show African-Americans prefer.
Delacroix then sets out to write a show so racist and obscene, that he will get fired and be able to go on to a network that will support his ideas. Unfortunately, his plan backfires, in more ways than one.
The first half hour locks you in, but in the end it's almost unbelievably shocking. Still, this film is very moving, and Spike Lee takes us to a brutal world many of us are too young to really have experienced.
