Review of Bamboozled (2000) by D.l. W — 26 Sep 2007
This is one of my favorite Spike Lee Joints! In Bamboozled the viewer takes the journey along with Pierre Delacroix as he develops a Sambo like urban character to keep his job on network television. His show is a hit.
But the effect that it is having on him and the fans of the show is questionable. This movie is thought provoking. How does the media manipulate stereotypes--especially negative ones-into commerical success? Is it soley the executives that are responsible? What role does the viewer play in this situation? In Bamboozled the viewer will find that it is difficult not to check your individual attitude on the practices of network television.
Spike provides the viewers with humour that is deep enough to think about. I like the fact that this film provides friends with the opportunity to discuss what we think about the imagery that is commerically successful-yet negative no matter how much mass popularity it enjoys.
