Review of Bambi II (2006) by Brady L — 24 Dec 2018
Mid-quels are hard films to put together. You have a beginning and an ending present in another film. You have characters already introduced and plots in motion even before you have started your new film.
It does not help that there are 85 years between the two films. Not only do they have to find new actors to play the classic characters, but Disney had also changed its animation style drastically over that time.
The animation in the original is beautiful. The use of multiple layered backgrounds gives the film almost a three-dimensional look and feel and the attention to detail on the animals themselves was astonishing.
The sequel seems far too cartoony and the backgrounds seem almost photo-shopped on after the fact. This film was released around the resurgence of Disney animated films but simply does not have the impact that others in its era had on audiences.
This film can be skipped and you will not feel like you were missing anything. Bambi II does not live up to its predecessor in any way and does not need to be viewed as a sequel.
