Review of Balto (1995) by Gregory M — 22 Dec 2018
A very dark animated movie with a very unusual plot. The themes discussed in the story are really gruesome and sad for young kids and audiences in general. It can be a disturbing little story and that's quite bold and remarkable.
"Balto" is not the typical animated movie in the sense that too much feels at stake, and especially things that mostly matter to an audience. I can see how making a movie about animated animals seems a good choice for a movie studio, but "Balto" is very much grounded in a real problem and it kinda never really plays well as an animated movie.
The production team felt there needed to be the typical light-hearted animated movie moments and that's where the movie really hinters. "Balto" manages to make the audience care about the plot, and fear of what it's at stake, creating the atmosphere and bringing out the emotions, but then ruins it all by having the silly moments that are expected in an animated movie aimed at children.
A bold choice for a storyline, yet not delivered accordingly.
