Review of Bad Words (2013) by Ryan T — 20 Mar 2015
Like Bateman but he plays the same guy every time so I really had no interest in seeing this until Dan Patrick raved about it. Wow. Not only is it laugh out loud funny and pretty original, but there's actually a solid story line to it.
I just reviewed A Perfect World and discussed a lack of kids who stand out in movies. The kid in this is pretty good. He and Bateman go well together. For once, Bateman actually stands out a bit, not because of the acting, but because of the language. Even though the movie is centered around kids at a spelling bee, Bateman is pretty profane. I definitely enjoyed some of that.
But the kicker is the story. Not going to spoil it, but how ridiculous is a grown man competing in spelling bees. Until you get the motive. Maybe it's still cheesy, but I respect that they at least tied things up and made it as believable as they could.
