What I really appreciated about this movie is the creative and unique premise. I don't think there is any movie about spelling bees quite as foul-mouthed yet heartfelt as this one. I think the story took interesting directions and the jokes were pretty funny.
Jason Bateman steals the show as the unlikable yet undeniably hilarious main character. His character does grow on you and the movie becomes a pretty sweet movie about an unlikely friendship. I think the comedy and drama were balanced well overall.
Some of the jokes didn't hit as hard as others but overall I enjoyed the movie. If you're offended by stereotype humor, some of the dialogue will rub you the wrong way, but it doesn't typically bother me if it is included in a comedy and I still found myself laughing.
It's a funny and original movie that fans of raunchy comedies should check out.
