Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Kay B — 20 Oct 2018
Some of the best acting on film this year. Brilliant story telling and cinematography, set design and music. Although self indulgent on the length of the film and pacing, it breaks the Hollywood superhero blockbuster agenda with good ol' grassroots movie crafting. You won't be allowed to sit back and check your brain and the door. And if you do, you'll most likely not like this film.
Slow on the set up, it climbs with such an enormous, riveting unapologetic vigor.
It doesn't try to be a Tarantino film, because it's so much more elegant, relying on the characters performance to fire the shots rather than over the top straight edged shock value.
Agatha Christy meets 1969, with practical sets and lighting that will lead you to put your trust in storytelling structure once again.
