Review of Bad News Bears (2005) by Christopher K — 23 Jun 2011
I'm not much of a baseball fan, but I always enjoy a good baseball flick. This is one of the few remakes that is just as entertaining as the original. Billy Bob Thornton is perfectly cast as Buttermaker, replacing Matthau's drunken schlub with a drunken scuz.
He is given some great, hilarious, politically incorrect lines and, if you'll pardon the expression, hits them all out of the park. Between "Dazed and Confused", "School of Rock", and now "Bears", Richard Linklater has proved he's very adept at getting great performances out of a young cast, and the new Bears lineup are just as foul-mouthed and funny as the original bunch.
The story itself is nothing new, but one doesn't watch sports movies to be surprised. Great sports flicks get you excited about the game (even if you could care less about them in real life) and leaves you feeling happy and inspired.
This one does just that. Fun and funny.
