Review of Bad Boy Bubby (1993) by Ryan D — 26 Jun 2009
This is an odd movie. A boy, either born retarded or raised that way, grows up knowing no one but his mother. A woman who uses him as a thing for company and sex, who has raised him to believe the world outside of their home is poisonous.
Eventually a bit of the outside world comes to them and things change. Suddenly Bubby is the mad man on the streets, attracting all kinds of weird situations. The movie feels very slow. It's meant to disgust and it's very against religion or at least it only shows religion in bad light.
Characters use religion to misuse their children, and ironically the character most vocally against God, is working in a church when Bubby meets him. The movie has very little music, which helps add to the boredom I felt watching it, but also makes the disgusting parts more real.
In fact the only music in the movie is that which characters are singing/playing or sometimes in the latter half, religious organ music overplaying scenes that wouldn't normally fit it. I guess besides the slowness and the disgusting and pessimistic situations, what really didn't attract me was that the movie is anti-predictable.
It's as random as a mad man.
