Review of Bachelorette (2012) by Heather H — 29 May 2013
The movie really circles around 4 friends who, frankly, aren't even that nice to each other. Rebel Wilson plays 'Becky' who is the only decently put together girl in the group and is about to marry the man of her dreams. Kirsten Dunst's character, 'Regan' is a bit of a perfectionist "mean girl" and is shocked and appalled when finds out she won't be the first of the bunch to get married. She is less than enthusiastic when she agrees to be Becky's maid of honor. As you can guess by the title of the film, most of it takes place the night before her wedding and when Becky shuts down the bachelorette party early, Regan, Katie and Gena (Dunst, Fisher, Caplan) throw a party of their own. Shenanigans ensue. Will they ruin the wedding or save it just in time?!
It definitely lacks some originality but I really wanted to like this movie. It had decent potential to be a quirky romantic comedy. Unfortunately, I didn't like this movie much at all. The story wasn't even the biggest problem for me. The characters were... which is probably worse. It felt like all of the characters (both guy and girl) lacked depth or personality and I found it difficult to relate to any of them. The sloppy and superficial behavior didn't make for any great comedic moments either and the parts that were funny were really underwhelming. Definite potential but as a whole it just didn't work, for me, at all.
