Review of Babette's Feast (1987) by Gary K — 27 Aug 2008
After a recent viewing I realized that this is a very slow movie. As it should be. The bulk of the story is a drawn out, somewhat depressing build-up to Babette's preparation and presentation of the "feast".
The feast itself is a notable culinary creation, but without the context of the greyness of life in the isolated Danish fishing village, the joy of the feast as experienced by the villagers would have been lost.
As it is, you can almost taste the food.
